Weekend on the Water

A Summer Escape to South Haven

As Austin trades swimsuits for sweaters, it’s the perfect time to daydream about your next dose of sunshine, preferably the kind that comes with a lighthouse view and sand between your toes. South Haven, Michigan, is a postcard-perfect beach town along Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. Breezy boardwalks, B&B charm, and golden-hour views that will take your breath away call visitors to come enjoy.

Friday: Arrive + Unwind

Ease into the weekend with a stop at Van Buren State Park, where rolling dunes frame sweeping views of Lake Michigan. Once in town, check in to the Inn at the Park, a classic B&B, or embrace novelty at the Caboose Inn, a converted train car with plenty of charm.

Take a quiet stroll through Pilgrim Haven Natural Area, a peaceful stretch of shoreline that feels worlds away from the crowds. Then head to Clementine’s for dinner—the wait is worth it for onion rings the size of your face. End the evening at Black River Tavern, where live music and a low-key crowd welcome you to the weekend.

Saturday: Explore + Indulge

Start your morning at Phoenix Street on Broadway before diving into South Haven’s nautical spirit. At the Michigan Maritime Museum, explore immersive exhibits on shipwrecks and seafaring life, then step aboard a fleet of historic vessels.

Water shapes the pace of this town, and a day on the lake is essential. Rent a kayak, hop on a jet ski, or charter a fishing boat from the Black River Harbor, home to more than 2,000 slips for every kind of craft. Or rather, book a sunset cruise and watch the sky melt into gold.

After freshening up, enjoy a romantic dinner at Tello Italian Bistro, then head to The Idler Riverboat for lake views and a local favorite, the “S.H.I.T.” (South Haven Iced Tea). It’s sweet, strong, and the perfect way to end the evening.

Sunday: Relax + Retreat

Slow things down with brunch at a lakeside café. Spend your last morning wandering the quaint downtown, where art galleries, antique shops, and local boutiques line the walkable streets. Pop into a studio for Michigan-made art or book a spa treatment to end your trip on a restorative note.

Before you leave, stop by Captain Lou’s for the perch basket and one more view of the Black River. If you can’t quite say goodbye, claim a patch of sand for one last hour in the sun. You’ll already be planning your return trip.

Getting There: It’s about two-hour drive from Chicago, three from Detroit.

Best Time to Visit: Late May through Labor Day for peak beach weather

Must-Do: Walk the lighthouse pier at sunset

Local Sip: The “S.H.I.T.” (South Haven Iced Tea) at The Idler

Worth the Wait: Clementine’s onion rings

Hidden Gem: Pilgrim Haven Natural Area for early morning walks
