Vacations that Promise Stick-with-You-Forever Memories
Words & Photos Ashley Bowling
The best family trips aren’t about perfection. They’re about places that meet everyone halfway, where kids explore, parents exhale, and memories sneak up on you long after you’re home. These are the trips that nailed it for our family, complete with the must-see, must-taste, and “remember when?” moments you’ll quote for the rest of your lives.
Cannon Beach
Cannon Beach, Oregon, is where kids build driftwood forts and adults stare at the Pacific like they’ve entered some form of heaven. It’s a place where tide pools and flocks of puffins double as science class. Haystack Rock feels mythical at low tide with its colorful starfish and slimy sea anemones. Hug Point at low tide spills its secrets, letting curious explorers wander sea caves on dry land. Ecola State Park, cozy, walkable, and wildly photogenic, is a slow clap kind of place. The clam chowder and Fish & Chips at Ecola Seafood Restaurant & Market or cinnamon rolls at Sea Level Bakery + Coffee are both messy and perfect, but required. This magical part of the country will leave you feeling satisfied in a way you didn’t know you needed.

U.S. Virgin Islands
For warm water, calm beaches, and snorkeling so good it feels unfair, the Virgin Islands tease tranquility. Think beach naps for parents, hermit crabs for kids, and the sweet realization that everyone is actually relaxed. Fresh ceviche and pitchers of margaritas at Agave Tequila Bar will have you on island time in no time. Snorkeling with sea turtles at Buck Island (St. Croix), sitting in the shallows with lemon sharks at Francis Bay (St. John), and strolling Magens Bay (St. Thomas) for calm, kid-proof waves lapping the shore are all bucket list items to check. No matter which bays or coves you land (because there are hundreds!), it’s sure to unlock core memories. Pro-tip: Don’t be afraid to double check the ferry schedules and island hop for the day.
Banff
Banff, Canada, the kind of place that makes kids whisper “whoa” without prompting, boasts turquoise lakes, gondola rides, wildlife sightings, and hot chocolate that tastes better when surrounded by mountains. It’s outdoor adventure without the roughing-it regret. Lake Louise before noon etches into the memory banks with its crystalline water that looks photo-shopped. Cave and Basin National Historic Site is worth visiting even though visitors can no longer dip into the underground hot springs. But don’t fret; there are still three other mineral springs nearby where a one-of-a-kind-swim in warm blue water equals an instant reset. Pro-tip: Grab some post-hike (or post-ski) burgers at Whitehorn Bistro and hot chocolate so good that it tastes earned.
San Diego
San Diego, California, earns a gold star for family travel: perfect weather, museums galore, the beaches, and a zoo that actually lives up to the hype. Surf lessons, fish tacos, and sunsets make even the crankiest of travelers pause. Order any taco or margarita at La Puerto during happy hour and everyone will leave satisfied. La Jolla Cove seals, kayaking through the caves, followed by a beach nap at Torrey Pines State Park, make for a day well spent. Pro-tip: Go in October, when Balboa Park turns into a parent win. Kids get into most museums for free, and San Diego Zoo lets the little ones roam gratis, too.

Yellowstone & Grand Teton
This part of the country has geysers that erupt on schedule (bravo, Old Faithful), bison traffic jams you won’t complain about, and mountains that look fake. It’s a trip that turns kids into junior park rangers and adults into wide-eyed kids again. Wildlife spotting in Lamar Valley is pure Hall-of-Fame material, white-water rating the Yellowstone River is unforgettable, and somehow so is mulberry ice cream in hand while wandering Mammoth Hot Springs.. Grand Teton National Park adds cowboy charm and stunning mountain views. And in Jackson Hole, waffles at Persephone Bakery and a gondola ride will make everyone gasp.
Costa Rica
Think steamy hot springs, rumbling volcanoes, dripping rainforests, beautiful beaches, bioluminescent bays, turtle hatchings, and whale watching. No matter where you land in Costa Rica, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure book. Inner tubing through canyons in Guanacaste and ziplining through Monteverde cloud forest encourage screams of joy. Sloth-spotting in Manuel Antonio National Park makes the family history books. Arabica coffees and fresh fruit smoothies are a simple, perfect fuel that practically sing the local mantra of “pura vida.” Costa Rica is just one of those places that balances thrill and chill beautifully. Bonus: Kids return home fluent in toucan-ese and fully qualified to identify species of monkeys by their noises, basically tiny jungle DJs with animal sound credentials. Double bonus: Costa Rica has all-inclusive resorts.

Oahu
Volcanoes, waterfalls, luaus, beaches, and shaved ice on repeat. Hawaii, East Honolulu to be exact, somehow manages to be relaxing and endlessly entertaining. Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay is unreal and it’s on a beach so beautiful it feels like the ocean is bragging. Gecko Girlz Shave Ice & Ice Cream Shop (order one per kid) and poké from HanaPa’a Market will be the cherry on top of your day. Sunrise at Koko Crater (or Makapu’u Point if you need a lighter trail) will sweep you off your feet, and sunset at a luau will have even picky eaters saying “yes.” This trip is cultural experiences woven into natural beauty, gifting memories that feel meaningful, not just sunny.

Northern Ireland
It’s road trips through storybook landscapes, Giant’s Causeway showing off, and enough history to spark curiosity in even the most screen-loving humans. Northern Ireland is dramatic in the best way: think fantasy meets geography class. Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge will blow your mind with its turquoise waters and sweeping views. Dunluce Castle ruins perched dramatically on a basalt outcrop overlooking the sea makes imaginations run wild, while Whiterocks Coastal Park is an equally stunning experience. You’ll soon discover why many “Game of Thrones” filming sites splatter the landscape (Pollnagollum Cave, Dragonstone Cliffs, The Dark Hedges). Glenariff Gorge Waterfall Trail is less than two miles of waterfalls, steep steps, mud-splattered shoes that make kids feel wildly accomplished and parents mildly heroic. Hearty meals, mountain goats, and storytelling along the Coastal Causeway make memories that won’t soon be forgotten.
Arkansas
Waterfalls, swimming holes, hiking trails, and cabins that beg for board games. Arkansas is affordable, unfussy, and surprisingly stunning. It’s the kind of place where days feel long (in a good way) and phones mysteriously disappear. Hiking to waterfalls at Petit Jean State Park has easy trails with a big payoff. Swimming holes in the Ozarks feel secret and magical.
Budget saved. Bragging Rights Earned.
We make this work by treating credit card points like found money for future memories.
- Pick one main card with strong travel rewards earnings, and use it for regular expenses you already pay, like groceries, gas, utilities—nothing extra.
- Pay it off every month: interest wipes out the magic faster than a missed connection.
- Book through transfer partners (or points portals) for the biggest bang: think flights and hotels.
- Time big expenses (insurance, tuition, home projects, taxes) and take advantage of sign-up bonuses.
- Redeem points for the biggest costs first (flights and multi-night stays), then pay cash for smaller stuff.
- Stay flexible with travel dates and airports. This is where points really shine.
- Set a family goal: “These points = Banff” hits differently than “generic travel fund.”
Bottom line: You don’t need to be a points wizard. One or two good cards with good habits and a little patience can turn ordinary spending into extraordinary family trips without blowing the budget.
