Adult Wonderland: Jackalope South Shore

Three Unique Experiences Under One Roof

If you’re in the mood for a quirky, adults-only playground where “stay awhile” quickly turns into “let’s explore,” step through the doors of The Jackalope South Shore.

Founder Jason Burton has been part of Austin’s bar scene for more than two decades. He opened his first piano bar on 6th Street 22 years ago and went on to open several other downtown spots. These days, The Jackalope South Shore is home.

“I never wanted to go to a bar and just sit there forever,” Jason explains. “We designed this space so you can wander and bar hop in one spot.”

That one spot actually houses three distinct experiences under one roof: The Jackalope, Showpony, and Copperhead. Each one is designed with a different mood in mind.

The Jackalope, the main attraction and largest of the trio, pulses with energy and exudes classic dive bar charm. Showpony is a tucked-away lounge perfect for karaoke, comedy nights, and private events. Copperhead brings a moody, rock-and-roll vibe, where cult horror flicks might be playing while regulars sip something strong between rounds of pinball.

The bar’s entertainment menu offers something for just about every kind of night out. Inside, you’ll find pool tables, skee ball, darts, pinball machines, basketball shoot-out games, and even a photo booth for documenting the fun. Yard games like cornhole and giant Jenga keep things playful on the patio, where dogs are always welcome and live music occasionally takes over the outdoor stage. Regular events here are equal parts hilarious and offbeat, with adult-themed bingo on Wednesdays and karaoke Thursday through Sunday.

Come hungry, because their food is no afterthought. Crowd favorites include the pancake on a stick (served during brunch) and the smashed pimento cheese burger. Their applewood-smoked wings, brined and tossed in one of their bold sauces, are a must-try. Pair it all with a frozen Helldorado, a boozy slushy, somehow served in a take-home cup.

At its core, The Jackalope South Shore is a full-blown experience built on community and overflowing with personality. From the women-led management team to the ever-evolving lineup of games, events, and surprises, it’s a place where regulars feel like family and newcomers quickly become part of the mix.

“We wanted to build something fun and genuine,” Jason smiles, “where people can be themselves, cut loose, and not take it all too seriously.”

Games That Give Back
One of the bar’s most unexpected features is the sweepstakes room, filled with slot-style games where playtime has purpose. Winnings help provide service animals for disabled veterans, making this little corner of the bar feel as rewarding as it is fun.

Bar Boss Babes
With managing partner Lindsey Petitta at the helm, The Jackalope South Shore stands out as a mostly women-led team in a male-dominated industry, bringing a fresh perspective, serious skill, and a whole lot of heart to the bar scene.
