More Than a Center

Building Community at AARC

As the need for connection grows, Asian American Resource Center (AARC) responds with a space for healing, learning, and celebrating the Asian American culture in Austin. Part of the City of Austin’s Cultural Education & Programs Division, AARC serves as a vital resource for Asian American communities, offering a place where individuals can thrive across generations.

In response to growing discrimination against Asian Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic, AARC reimagined its mission and became a place where communities could heal and thrive. This vision has come to life in the form of intergenerational mentorships, accessible art exhibits, English language classes, wellness activities, and cultural events that reflect the diversity of the Asian American experience in Austin.

“We don’t want to be the experts on any one culture,” explains Culture & Arts Education Manager Tony Vo. “But we can be a trusted resource for the Asian American experience in Austin.”

AARC embraces a mosaic of stories, from families who have lived in Austin for generations to refugees starting anew. It’s a place where each person’s journey is honored, and services cater to both immediate needs and cultural affirmation by offering ESL courses, citizenship clinics, senior transportation, and meals through their partnership with Meals on Wheels.

But their work goes beyond providing services, as it also fosters connection. Through the Teen Mentorship Program, young people find guidance and gain confidence while exploring their identities. The Hyphenated Book Club brings neighbors together, diving deep into literature that reflects the complexity and joy of Asian American life. Local artists and cultural organizations frequently use the center’s affordable spaces to host events, performances, and gatherings that bring the community together.

Every decision at AARC is made with intention, as the staff prioritizes safety, inclusivity, and collaboration with local nonprofits and artists. The center’s influence extends well beyond its own walls, forging partnerships with other cultural institutions across Austin to elevate the voices of communities of color and share in their collective stories.

“We really believe in abundance,” says Marketing Rep Shimarah Mehrotra. “When we grow together, everyone benefits.”
