Where safari dreams come true, just outside of Austin.
If you’ve ever wanted to feed a giraffe in your pajamas, cuddle a baby kangaroo, or get splashed by an otter mid-cannonball, your wildest dreams might just be waiting down a gravel road in McGregor, Texas.
Welcome to Blue Hills Ranch, a 150-acre animal sanctuary-
meets-resort, where the line between wild animal and invited guest is charmingly blurry. Nestled just an hour and change north of Austin, this unexpected slice of safari life trades the distant, binocular-
required game drive for something far more intimate—and arguably much more fun. Think giraffes at breakfast, baby fawns on your porch, and a lodge with animals who know they’re the real stars of the show.
Giraffe Mornings & Camel Side-Eyes
Your day begins, not with an alarm but, with the soft patter of hooves. Sunlight filters in through towering windows, and the shadow that lumbers by your Giraffe Villa isn’t a passing cloud. It’s actually Melvin, a 14-foot-tall breakfast date who’s developed a taste for carrots and crackers. With lashes that would put any stylist to shame, Melvin doesn’t just show up; he glides in with a kind of majestic curiosity that makes your latte suddenly feel insignificant.
Outside, camels lounge like aloof teenagers, sizing you up as they chew and judge. A zebra or two may zip past the not-so-distant field. There’s a gossip-loving emu named Lisa who clearly has the scoop on everyone. This is not a petting zoo. It’s an open-air animal commune where you are the newcomer—and they’re deciding if you’re cool enough to stay.

Tour de Critter
Hop in an open-aired safari Jeep with your guide, and you’re off. We joke with our guide, Jackie, comparing giraffes to poets (her personal fave) and camels to CPAs. Across wide-open mesquite-dotted plains, bison loiter and zebras strut, while antelope prance in the distance as if they’re opening for The Nutcracker. A wild mustang might sneeze on you—true story—and you’ll feel less like a spectator and more like a participant in a four-legged block party, arriving with the much-anticipated alcohol. Yet, in this case, it’s buckets full of animal treats.
Everything feels close enough to touch. Because it is.
There becomes something profoundly disarming about seeing a creature that normally appears only in children’s books or behind glass at zoo exhibits simply existing, unbothered, yet vaguely amused by your presence.
The Visionary: Blue Hills Ranch isn’t the kind of place that just happens—it’s the living vision of founder, Matt Lieberman, whose heart beats a little louder for animals than most. What began as a dream to create a space where people could connect with wildlife up close has grown, under Matt’s watchful eye, into a full-blown safari experience tucked in the quiet hills of McGregor, Texas. A sanctuary where exotic creatures roam free—all part of Matt’s deeply personal mission to offer not just a stay but also a sense of wonder. His love for the animals isn’t performative—it’s woven into every inch of the ranch, from the custom villas and barn he’s dreamed up himself to the joy he gets laying on the back porch playing with the fawns. For Matt, Blue Hills Ranch isn’t a business—it’s a love letter to wild things.
At Camp (That’’s Definitely Not “Camping”)
Your villa is more Napa Valley than Serengeti, with a king-sized bed, Bluetooth speakers, full kitchen, and a rain shower with a view. You’ll rinse off the dust and plop into a lounger as mini donkeys do drive-bys in the distance. But don’t get too comfy, there are babies to meet.
Marlu, a baby kangaroo, arrives to the lodge wrapped in a pouch like a marsupial burrito. Fern, a spotted fawn with lashes for days, gently tugs on your shorts as if to say, “Excuse me, it’s bottle time.” Lady, the calf, is her snuggle buddy—equal parts cow and curious toddler. She demands scratches and isn’t above nudging your hip with her wet nose if you’re moving too slowly in prepping her milk. Raised by humans, these sweet misfits now live as pampered ranch celebrities, greeting guests with innocent curiosity and big cuddles.
Chaos at the Otter Pool
Then there’s the otter pool—a splash zone of pure, unfiltered joy. You’ll hear them before you see them: squeaks, chirps, and snorts. Once you’re in the water, the games begin. They tug at swimsuit ties, spin underwater, and gleefully chase ice cubes tossed by the staff. Add in raw fish, and the otters go from playful to ecstatic, practically vibrating with glee. You’ll leave the water strangely renewed—like you’ve just been baptized in pure, unfiltered mischief.
It’s chaotic. It’s hilarious. It’s impossible not to love.

Dinner Date (with Giraffes)
As sunset bleeds orange and peach across the sky, it’s time for one last delight: dinner in the treetops. You’ll climb to a raised platform, sipping champagne eye-level with giraffes. They glide in, silently, like parade floats with necks that defy gravity. They’re unhurried creatures, possessing the sort of serenity of Zen monks. A giraffe named Melvin (of course it’s Melvin) arrives first, casually leaning in to share a salad. He chews slowly, side-eyeing in a mutual agreement of peace. But the “kissing crackers” are the true
prize of the meal. That’s right, you hold the extra large treat in your mouth while these gentle giants unfurl their abnormally long tongues to steal their favorite dessert from your lips. It’s hard to say who’s more intrigued—you, giddy with disbelief at the awkwardness, or Melvin.
The (Wild) Life of Luxury
Blue Hills Ranch offers lodging packages, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the on-site chef, which are pre-ordered the day prior. You might be handed a glass of crisp white wine already dripping with condensation. Dishes like creamy lasagna stand out, but the chocolate smothered fried s’mores are so captivating they achieve silence across the dining room. Once more, as the sun bleeds out across the sky in burnt ochre and apricot, the silhouette of a lone giraffe crosses the horizon like a slow punctuation mark.
Want in?
Besides overnight stays, Blue Hills Ranch offers event bookings (yes, they do weddings), and private animal experiences. Whether you’re booking the Giraffe Villa or Zebra Cabin, you’ll find each accommodation tailored to make you feel part of the herd.
And if you’re just in it for a day trip, they open experience passes to daytime guests seven to ten days out, and private tours too. But trust us—once you wake up to a giraffe outside your window, it’s hard to go back to life as it was.
