Virtual Classes & Hangouts in ATX

Join a Virtual Event while Supporting Local Businesses

Words by Mallory Lehenbauer

As everyone adjusts to staying home, there is still a way to connect and support local businesses and communities.

Many local businesses are offering classes and experiences from the comfort of your own home. From cooking and mixology to screen printing and model drawing, the local Austin community is finding creative ways to connect and learn in a time of social distancing.

Cooking & Cocktails Classes

Intero’s Cooking Classes

Take an online class from Chef Ian Thurwachter’s kitchen as a one-on-one or group experience. If you’ve ever been to this Italian restaurant and tasted their food, then you know what a treat this is! Virtual guests can enjoy preparing some delicious Intero favorites or customize a class to a specific preference. After participants register, they can pick up an ingredients kit from Intero or request the grocery list ahead of time to shop. Craft cocktail making, beer and chocolate pairing classes are coming soon. {Read more about Intero here.}

Art Classes

CRAFT Online Workshops

Classes are no longer happening in the studio but online. See current offerings on the schedule, i.e. screen printing, alcohol ink, and modern calligraphy. Once registered for the class, the necessary supplies will be delivered. Beyond classes, virtual craft circles are being hosted regularly, where participants can log on and “hang out,” like a virtual happy hour. Owner Eli Winkelman is also offering “consulting” on projects and crafts while also delivering craft supplies.

Model Drawing Class

Atelier Dojo, a professional arts academy locally owned by four talented East Austin female-artists, is now offering online classes. For some, art can be a way to release stress or to let go of troubles through the creative process. The Dojo’s current class is a 3-hour costumed-model drawing session. Artists (no matter their skill level) can use any supplies they wish, listen to music, share their work, and chat with others as a way to stay connected with the local art community.

Brush Lettering Basics

This brush lettering class takes handwriting and frames it into a modern approach. Local artist, Rhodalynn Jetton, moves through a flow that empowers clients to take their new skills and develop their own style. Those who sign up will have materials delivered to them and can expect to have fun! And will leave this virtual class with a finished product they can be proud of.
